That wacky delay of game rule that lives in the infamy of Buffalo Sabres history bit the team again Saturday night in Joe Louis Arena. Rookie Tyler Myers inadvertantly flipped a puck over the glass and was sent to the penalty box with 1:13 left in regulation of a tie game. The Sabres killed the first portion of the penalty to escape with a point but couldn't survive it entirely.

You hate to see those but it happens   -Lindy Ruff

H e was just having fun playing. Mike Grier just yelled down, 'Tyler, in and out, in and out,' and I think he was getting in and out before some players were getting in," Buffalo Sabres coach Lindy Ruff, discussing Tyler Myers's four-point night against the Dallas Stars on Wednesday, which jumped the Buffalo defenceman into a second-place tie with John Tavares for the rookie scoring lead behind Colorado's Matt Duchene. A defenceman hasn't won the Calder since Barrett Jackman in 2003.

BUFFALO " When you've scored one power-play goal in five weeks and operate at a paltry 17 percent for the season, success tends to be measured differently. That's why Craig Rivet decided to bend the rules a bit. The Sabres captain is counting Mark Mancari's goal Wednesday, which he scored four seconds after a penalty expired, as a power-play tally.

I’m counting it. I’m counting it   -Craig Rivet

A growing concern about hits to the head was the major topic at the GM meetings earlier this week, and the matter was addressed by a pair of those general managers during Thursday's NHL Hour. Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly, filling in for Commissioner Gary Bettman, addressed Buffalo Sabres GM Darcy Regier and Vancouver Canucks GM Mike Gillis about what went on during the meetings in Boca Raton, Fla. Regier said he was impressed with how far his contemporaries were willing to go in dealing with the issue,

I told the commissioner at breakfast (Wednesday) morning that I thought people perhaps might take positions, maybe draw a line in the sand and only be willing to go to a certain extent on removing those types of hits   -Darcy Regier

The Buffalo Sabres' three-game winning streak is a stroke of pretty good timing. It has virtually cemented them as a playoff team for the first time since 2007 and kept them at the top of the Northeast Division race. And it was really important when you look at what's left on the schedule.

Our road play has been disappointing but I think we got it back in the right direction with our win in New York   -Lindy Ruff

"You try to get the puck to the net," Myers explained.
